The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into the 2013-'14 Nissan Sentra and Versa vehicles after receiving a number of consumer complaints of braking problems.
Approximately 200,000 vehicles are affected by the probe.
"Nissan received a request for information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) concerning eight customer complaints of excessive brake pedal travel feel on model year 2013 and 2014 Versa and Sentra vehicles," said Steve Yaeger, a Nissan spokesman, according to Edmunds.
A recall has not been issued yet.
The safety administration confirmed it has received eight complaints so far of alleged incidents involving excessive brake pedal travel in the vehicles.
"The vehicle did not respond to braking attempts and the contact had to repeatedly pump the brake to stop the vehicle," said one complaint about a 2013 Nissan Sentra, which was posted on the NHTSA website. "The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who stated that both master wheel cylinders would need to be replaced. The approximate failure mileage was 22,488."
Some of the complaints date back as far as 2012. A couple of the complaints involved vehicles with less than 200 miles on them.
One complaint said a 2013 Sentra only had 143 miles on the odometer before the owner noticed issues with the vehicle's brakes.
A preliminary evaluation often precedes a vehicle recall.
"Nissan is committed to a high level of customer safety, service and satisfaction and seeks to provide an outstanding ownership experience to Nissan Versa and Sentra owners," said Yaeger. "We will carefully review this issue and, as always, work with the regulators to answer their questions."
