Volkswagen has announced its 2014 Passat sedan recently earned the highest five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The new Passat earned five stars in the front and side crash tests and four stars in the rollover test, according to the NHTSA.
The Passat also earned a Top Safety Pick designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Volkswagen confirmed that the 2014 Passat received "Good" ratings in every crash test conducted by the institute, and an "Acceptable" rating in the small overlap front crash test.
The small overlap front crash test was designed by the IIHS to replicate what occurs when the front corner of any vehicle collides with another or a large object like a utility pole or tree.
The vehicle performed well thanks to a number of standard safety equipment found on the vehicle, including electronic stability control and antilock brakes.
A rearview camera, which was designed to help prevent back-over accidents, is also standard on SE and higher trims, according to the automaker
Vehicles that compete with the new Passat includes the 2014 Ford Fusion, Honda Accord and Mazda 6, among others.
All of the aforementioned vehicles of the Passat also earned five-star safety rating from the NHTSA.
