General Motors India has confirmed that it will start exporting vehicles from the country starting sometime in 2015, according to Reuters.

The automaker also said it will sell a left-handed-drive version of its Chevrolet Beat hatchback to Chile sometime in the first quarter of 2015.

"The start of Beat exports underlines GM's commitment to India and demonstrates the quality of the country's growing supplier base," said GM India President and Managing Director Arvind Saxena, according to Economic Times.

GM India will begin production of the vehicles meant for export at its Talegaon plant in the second half of 2014.

The plant is located in western India. GM has two factories in India capable of building over 282,000 vehicles every year.

The plants have been using less than a third of its total capacity however, something the automaker wants to change quickly, according to Reuters.

"The exports will create more employment opportunities within GM India and the supplier community while helping improve capacity utilization at the Talegaon Plant," said Saxena.

GM sold almost 81,000 passenger vehicles in India during the fiscal year that ended in March, representing a market share of 3.2 percent, according to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.

Other automakers are looking into making India a regional export location as well, like Ford, to take advantage of it as a low-cost manufacturing base.
