General Motors has confirmed that it will debut a new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show this week.
The Colorado and Canyon will be aimed for one specific market: workers who need trucks, but not as big as the GMC Sierra or Silverado. The automaker wants assure customers that smaller trucks are just as useful as bigger ones.
The 2015 Colorado weighs 900 lbs less and is 16 inches shorter than the Chevy Silverado, according to the automaker.
"If there was a brand, a domestic brand, that could fill that space and really provide those types of things, we thought Chevy was a good place to do it," said Alan Batey, global Chevrolet chief, at a preview of the Colorado last week in Detroit.
GM stopped making the old Colorado in 2012. The last four years, sales never reached 39,000 in the U.S., according to the Associated Press.
Features includes a Touch-screen and multiple USB ports for iPods, phones and other devices. Six standard air bags, standard rear-vision camera.
The new Colorado's interior comes with "far less hard plastic" than the previous Colorado, according to the AP.
"We didn't want to just create a really pretty truck that's accessorized but can't do anything," said Batey.
The new Canyon is due next fall. It will likely compete with the Toyota Tacoma, which was the most popular small truck in the U.S. in 2012.
