Tesla has reportedly confirmed pricing for its Model S sedan in Australia, starting the vehicle at $95,000 in standard trim, which compares to around $81,000 USD in North America.
Pricing should be officially announced next week. The top-of-the-line Tesla Model S with full options will cost around $200,000, Gizmodo Australia reported.
The cost for a Tesla Model S is driven up in Australia due to taxes including the 10 per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST), the Luxury Car Tax and Stamp Duty, according to Gizmodo.
While the electric car is a bit pricier in Australia compared with the U.S., the new BMW M5 still tops the fully optioned Model S when it comes to cost. Tesla is reportedly campaigning to encourage buyers to choose the decked-out version of the Model S for $200,000 rather than the $230,000 M5.
The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company said this week that it plans to build a charging infrastructure in Australia early next year, giving electric car drivers a network of charging stations to plug in their vehicles for free.
Tesla has been busy expanding business worldwide and also finalizing plans for a billion-dollar "gigafactory" somewhere in the southwest U.S. The company will break ground for the $5 billion project in two locations, with Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and Texas said to be vying for the spot.
The lithium-ion plant will be the largest such factory in the world after being completed and is expected to employ 6,500 workers.
Tesla has also been working to develop the new Model X, which is expected in showrooms sometime next summer.
"Extensive development work on Model X is underway and we expect to have production design prototypes ready in Q4," the automaker said in a recent letter to shareholders. "The tooling process has started with several suppliers and we expect production design prototypes to be ready in Q4 of this year."
