An Apple Maps satellite image went viral this weekend, not because the image proves that Apple Maps actually works, but because a strange object can be seen below the surface of the water in the picture.
Scotland's mysterious Loch Ness Monster, also referred to as "Nessie," can supposedly be seen swimming in the water in the picture, seemingly confirming the ancient creatures existence.
The object in the image appears to be 100 feet long right below the surface of the water.
Glen Campbell, the President and founder of The Official Loch Ness Monster Fan Club, seems hopeful that the image is that of the Loch Ness Monster.
"The interesting thing is that nobody has been able to explain what it is," Campbell, 49, said to ABC News. "It's pretty large, so it's not a seal or an otter. It's also not a whale or basking shark as some people claim, because they wouldn't go in fresh water."
One of the people who told the fan club about the images was Andrew Dixon, 26, who confirmed recently that he made the discovery by mistake.
"It was a total fluke that I found it. I was looking at satellite images of my town and then just thought I'd have a look at Loch Ness. The first thing that came into my head when I saw it was, 'That's the Loch Ness Monster.' It was the shape of it; I thought it had to be something more than a shadow," Dixon said to The Daily Mail.
Some people have theorized that the image is that of a boat.
"It looks like a boat wake, but the boat is missing. You can see some boats moored at the shore, but there isn't one here," Campbell said. "We've shown it to boat experts and they don't know what it is."
Campbell, who claims to have seen Nessie with his own eyes almost 20 years ago, says the image has brought the creature "back into the forefront of the public imagination," according to The Daily Mail.
