Fiat Recall: 2014 500L Called Back Over Transmission Problem

Mar 10, 2014 01:50 PM EDT | Matt Mercuro

Chrysler has confirmed it is recalling 2014 Fiat 500L vehicles to upgrade the transmission software.

Over 19,500 vehicles are affected by the recall, which comes after reports that the automatic transmission may not "readily" shift out of park, according to Edmunds.

Affected transmissions may not receive, or are slow to receive, an intended gear selection, according to the automaker.

"Chrysler Group engineers launched an investigation after reviewing reports that some vehicles equipped with dual dry clutch automatic transmissions would not shift readily out of park and/or their transmissions did not receive, or were slow to receive, an intended gear selection," the automaker said in a statement on its website. "The investigation discovered the function of one microcontroller component may be compromised by certain temperature extremes. A software update resolves the issue."

Chrysler said around 200 Fiat 500Ls may need a shift-module replacement to make to "ensure hardware-software compatibility."

The automaker is unaware of any injured or accidents caused by the issue.

A number of 2014 Fiat 500 owners have posted complaints regarding the vehicle on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.

"Does not shift into gear," reads one complaint posted on the NHTSA Web site last month. "Vehicle came to a complete stop while driving, very dangerous being on the expressway with family. After several attempts vehicle began to shift again."

Consumers will be contacted soon and told when to schedule service for their vehicles, Chrysler said.

Fiat dealers are being instructed to upgrade the transmission software, free of charge.

Owners with more questions can contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

The NHTSA has yet to comment on the recall at press time.
