Mazda has confirmed its 2014 Mazda 6 midsize sedan has earned a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The vehicle received five stars in the side crash test, four stars in the front crash test, and four stars in the rollover crash test, according to the NHTSA.
Standard safety features found on the vehicle includes: stability control, antilock brakes and an optional lane-departure warning system.
A rear cross-traffic alert system is a standard feature for the Mazda 6 Touring and Grand Touring vehicles, according to the automaker.
The Mazda 6 competes in the same segment as similar vehicles like the Hyundai Sonata, Toyota Camry and Volkswagen Passat.
Mazda also recently confirmed the Japanese sedan was named a 2014 Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The vehicle received "Good" ratings in almost every crash test conducted by the IIHS. It earned an "Acceptable" rating in the small overlap front crash test.
The difficult small overlap front crash test was created to replicate what occurs when the front corner of a vehicle hits with another vehicle or an object like a utility pole, according to the IIHS.
