GM Considering New Off-Road Pickup to Compete With Toyota

General Motors is supposedly mulling an idea to create a new midsize pickup truck that has more off-road capability than models like the 2015 GMC Canyon All Terrain and 2015 Chevrolet Colorado Z71, according to Edmunds.

The truck would likely be the automaker's response to the recently introduced 2015 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Series, which was unveiled at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show this month.

Toyota has said its Tacoma TRD was designed for serious off-roading adventures at the unveiling. TRD packages will be available for the Tundra and 4Runner as well, all of which were created by Toyota Racing Development (TRD).

The Toyota vehicles will be available sometime this fall, according to the automaker.

The pickup being considered would supposedly have higher ground clearance than the Colorado Z71 and GMC Canyon, according to GM Executive Chief Engineer Jeff Luke.

"We are looking to see if there is a market for a package like that and where it would fit branding-wise and nameplate-wise," Luke said at the Chicago Auto Show, according to Edmunds.

The truck will be aimed for those who like using their vehicle for rock climbing, to drive through the desert and other off-roading activities.

GM has not set a timetable for the decision.

"There are a lot of people who like to go off-road on the weekend," said Tom Wilkinson, a Chevrolet spokesman, according to Edmunds. "It is still 'streetable' but it gives you more off-road capability."
