Google Updates Maps for iOS To Show You a Faster Route

Google has debuted an update for Maps for iOS that will alert drivers when faster routes are available.

In Navigation mode, the app will now tell you when traffic is ahead and suggest an alternate route along with the calculated shorter travel time, PCMag.com reported. You have the option to reroute to the faster way or continue where you were going.

The update, which can be downloaded here, puts the iOS version of the app next to the Android Maps feature, which received the same change last month.

Google launched the update on Tuesday, saying, "Outsmart traffic and save time on the road--#GoogleMaps will notify you if there's a faster route," the Los Angeles Times reported.

The company added real-time traffic reports to the Maps app last summer soon after purchasing Waze, a crowd-sourced traffic app, according to PCMag. The tech giant reportedly paid $1.3 billion to bring the traffic app on board.

"This means that when Waze users report accidents, construction, road closures, and other incidents, the information now appears in the Google Maps apps for Android and iOS," PCMag said.

According to the L.A. Times, Waze became popular by using crowd sources to alert drivers to faster routes, and Google now seems to be using some of Waze's technology "to improve Google Maps."

The latest version of Google Maps also includes some bug fixes and is free in the Google store, AppAdvice reported.

"Note, though, that for this function to work properly, you must first ensure that Google Maps' background guidance is enabled by turning on iOS 7′s Background App Refresh feature," AppAdvice said.
