Thousands of gamers lined up around the country Thursday night to score the latest PlayStation game console, CNN reported.
Enthusiasts like George Nelums of Maryland stayed up to get the PlayStation 4, which launched at midnight.
"I've been a PS dude since the first PS," Nelums, who was the first in line at a Best Buy in Elkridge, Maryland, told CNN. "I'm not planning on sleeping tonight. I've got a 6-hour energy drink. I'm all set."
Nelums was one of around 100 others to wait at that location and thousands more who waited impatiently in lines nationwide.
Matt and Tammy Nyers, of Laurel, Maryland picked up two pre-ordered PlayStation 4 consoles at the Elkridge Best Buy, planning to sell one on eBay.
Describing himself as more of a sports gamer, Matt said he was looking forward to next year's "Madden" game and how it works with the new console.
"It is the latest and greatest and I want to see what they can do," he said. "I'm really wanting to see what games will be coming out next because they will be built just for the PS4. This is built more like a gaming rig (than the PS3)."
Around 500 people waited for the launch at the Standard High Line Hotel in Manhattan, which Sony rented out for the night, and watched a light show of video game scenes.
The PlayStation 4 is the first new home console from Sony in more than seven years and incorporates many new features, including more interaction between players, an updated controller and more streaming options.
The console's design took nearly seven years to perfect, said Sony President and CEO Andrew House.
"A device that is designed from the ground up to be able to serve up all those different kinds of experiences, but with a great user interface that's designed to work specifically in the living room, I think is still very, very important," he said.
Sony reported more than one million preorders of the new console in August. The PlayStation 4 will go on sale worldwide with the final launch scheduled for February in Japan.
