The new iPad Mini with retina display debuted in Apple's online store Tuesday, and retailers are already looking ahead to discounts, The Register reported.
Target will include the new device in its Black Friday sale, the outlet said. Customers who purchase the iPad Mini will also score a $75 in-store gift card, while iPad Air shoppers can receive a $500 gift card with purchase.
The new 7.9-inch iPad Mini has better resolution, rendering a sharper view to photos, videos and texts, ABC News reported. The tablet is available for $399 and is joined in the Apple lineup by the new iPad Air, which has a 9.7-inch display.
Brick and mortar Apple stores aren't selling the iPad Mini to customers directly; instead, shoppers can buy online and pick up the devices in the store. The new tablet is already likely to be the hot holiday item with demand expected to far outweigh supply.
Apple CEO Tim Cook still expects it to be an "iPad Christmas," even though Apple's iPad Air will vie with Amazon's Kindle Fire HDX, Google's Nexus 7 and Microsoft's Surface 2 this holiday season.
"We continue to view the tablet market as 'huge.' We see it as a large opportunity for us," Cook said last month. "We are not solely focused on unit share, as we've said many times, but on usage and customer satisfaction and other things that are very important to us."
Analysts and reviewers are inclined to agree, citing Apple as the leader in the tablet market.
"At $399, the new iPad Mini is certainly one of the more expensive 8-inch tablets on the market and a few multiples of the price beyond the least expensive Android tablets," Ross Rubin, principal analyst for Reticle Research, told ABC News. "However, it includes premium components including the high-resolution display and high-end A7 processor."
