A limited-edition 2014 Fiat 500 "1957 Edition" has been introduced to celebrate the 57th anniversary of the original 1957 "Nuova" Cinquecento (New 500), said a Chrysler press release.

Tricked out with a novelty exterior and a 1957-era wheel design, the new Fiat 500 is a throwback to the car lover's romance with Italian vehicles.

The Cinquecento was "one of the most iconic automobiles of all time," said the press release. The new 1957 Edition has a vintage look that comes in three classic exterior colors and boasts a luxurious ivory interior with premium leather seats.

"FIAT" badges accent the 16-inch retro wheels and the leather-wrapped steering wheel. With an innovative 1.4-liter engine and five-speed manual transmission, the car delivers around 40 miles per gallon in highway driving. A six-speed automatic transmission with driver-selectable gear changes is also an option, while the six-speaker premium audio system adds to the driving experience.

The last Fiat Nuova 500 was built in 1975 after 18 years of production. The vehicle was built to provide efficient and affordable transportation during Italy's rebuilding and recovery after World War II, said the press release.

Called "the right car at the right time," the Fiat Nuova 500 was an achievable car for Italians and other Europeans. During its 18 years of production, 3,893,294 examples of the Cinquecento were built.

"The 1957 Edition celebrates the Cinquecento, the icon of our brand, and its unique cachet of Italian style, efficiency and engaging road manners," said Jason Stoicevich, head of FIAT brand for North America, Chrysler Group LLC. "Created for Italian car and design fans who want an added sense of the historic Cinquecento's spirit, the '1957 Edition' features unique styling elements, material finishes and, of course, a manual transmission and sport-tuned suspension."

The 2014 Fiat 500 will arrive in spring 2014 for North American enthusiasts.
