Target is offering a deal to iPad owners to trade in any scratch-free, functioning iPad in return for a $200 in-store gift card, Mashable reported.
Shoppers can even trade in first-generation iPads for the deal. If they decide to upgrade, most stores are selling the new 16GB iPad Air for $479 with a built-in $20 discount.
Best Buy is offering a similar deal of $200 for an iPad trade-in, but store locations will only accept third- or fourth-generation iPads or iPad Minis, according to Mashable.
The Target electronics trade-in program accepts more than 20,000 items for various gift card values, the company website said. Shoppers can trade in their old electronic devices in the store or online.
The new iPad Air is reportedly nearly twice as fast as its predecessor as well as lighter and thinner. The 9.7-inch device has 10 hours of battery life and weighs only a pound, about a third less than the earlier version, The New York Times reports.
It faces competition from Samsung's Galaxy Note 10.1, Microsoft's Surface 2, Amazon's Kindle Fire HDX, and soon, Google's new Nexus tablet.
Apple plans to unveil the new iPad Mini later this month, but the device could be an elusive holiday item. Market researchers say the second-generation iPad Mini will fall substantially short of demand. Less than 4 million units of the iPad Mini with retina display will be available in the fourth quarter, and the number could drop below 3 million.
The figure represents about one-third of the 8.9 million-unit volume of the first-generation iPad Mini shipments during the last quarter of 2012, said an IHS iSuppli Market Research news release.
