There are a lot of cars that pass through the Auto Trends test fleet which is memorable. The 2017 Volkswagen Golf R is one of them.

This 2017, the new VW Gold R in Mk7.5 forms inherits all the updates that apply to the Golf range in general and a few model-specific improvements. The vehicle needs no introduction, from quick soulless bit part player to the de-facto hatch choice in one generational update, it appeals both to the head and the heart.

The all-new 2017 Volkswagen Golf R exterior gets newly designed bumpers, LED headlights and taillights to create a design that takes on an even more dynamic look. The tailpipes are now located further out to the sides to give the car a wider appearance. At the sides, the new Golf R has improved the exterior mirror caps in Chrome Matt or Gloss Black or Carbon and various 18- and 19-inch wheel choices. Also new are the optional Spielberg 19-inch alloy wheels in Black with a high-gloss finish.

On the inside, the Golf R get new infotainment systems, like the 9.5-inch Discover Pro that comes with gesture control and the digital Active Info Display. The systems have the appearance that has been adapted to the Golf R. In the Sport trim, the Sport HMI of the infotainment system on the center console gives current engine parameters like charge pressure or current power demand.

Under the hood, the Golf R is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injected four-cylinder engine that produces 292 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. Customers have a choice of a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed dual clutch transmission.

Even though the engine is by far the very significant aspect of the Golf R, this car is what it is largely due to its AWD system. VW calls it 4MOTION.

The 2017 Volkswagen Golf R currently cost $35,655 for the manual version or $36,755 for the automatic plus additional $820 for the destination charge. For customers who prefer a model equipped with the dynamic chassis control and navigation, it will cost them $39,375 for the manual and $40,475 for the automatic.
