The Volkswagen Golf R is true all-out performance model. It has a 292-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, a sport suspension, and more. Now, a new Performance Package has also been teased!
Pros and Features. According to Car and Driver, the VW Golf R is a performance model that comes 4-wheel drive, seats five, and is a 4-door hatchback. Under the hood is a turbocharged and inter-cooled DOHC 16-valve inline-4 engine. It is 2.0-liter with iron block and aluminum head, as well as direct fuel injection. It is capable of 292 horsepower and 280-pound-feet of torque.
The hatchback has impressive performance for an all-wheel-drive system. It has great handling and does not sacrifice ride quality at all. It also has a handsomely built interior with premium materials and features accommodating and flexible cargo space.
The base Golf R comes in limited quantities with standard feature highlights. It includes 18-inch wheels with performance tires and adaptive xenon headlights. It also has a rear spoiler, keyless entry and ignition, and leather upholstery.
There is also a Volkswagen Golf R with DCC and Navigation which adds a suspension system called DCC as well as a navigation system. It also features 19-inch wheels, front and rear parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Other safety features include front and rear parking sensors, forward collision warning and mitigation, and a lane departure warning system.
Cons. The main con of the Golf R is its hefty price tag which starts at $36,475. This is over $10,000 more expensive than the top-rated Golf GTI.
What's New? For 2017, the previously optional Golf R Driver Assistance package with added safety features was made standard. In addition, a new Performance package will likely come soon!
According to a report by Auto Express, the new Performance package will feature new brakes, tweaked suspension, and a higher top speed! The upcoming "Performance Pack" is capable of nearly 310 horsepower and can now do 0 to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds. The new top speed is now 166 mph.
Verdict. The Volkswagen Golf R is a great performance model, albeit a bit pricey compared to the base Golf and GTI. It comes equipped with plenty of safety features and the upcoming Performance package is also an exciting new addition as well.
