NVIDIA revealed this week their latest line of Internet of Things-aimed processing powering called the NVIDIA Jetson TX2. This newest product of hardware will join the original Jetson TX1 and TK1 in NVIDIA's family of embedded computing products.
The NVIDIA Jetson TX2 is a full Linux computer on a small board the size of a Raspberry Pi. Its main attraction is a GPU based on the company's latest Pascal architecture, which is also the company's fastest GPUs, like the Tesla P100. The Pascal GPU can bring computer vision to robots and drones, letting them recognize objects and navigate around obstacles.
Deepu Talla, VP and General Manager of Tegra business at NVIDIA, said, "These devices will enable intelligent video analytics that keeps our cities smarter and safer, new kinds of robots that optimize manufacturing, and new collaboration that makes long- distance work more efficient." The basic components of this new hardware/software kit are outlined as follows.
The computer is an upgrade from the first Jetson TX1 and is two times more performance while drawing two times less power. The company claims their new product can deliver 1.5 teraflops of performance, which is unmatched on developer boards. The Raspberry Pi 3 is nowhere close to the TX2 in performance.
This new product can run Ubuntu and ROS, which is also built on top of the Linux OS. It has two 64-bit Nvidia quad-core ARM chips, 8GB of LPDDR4 memory, 32GB of storage, and 802.11ac Wi-Fi. The GPU can provide 4K video at 30 frames per second, or 2K video at 60 frames per second. It also has two Denver 2 CPU and four Cortex-A57 CPUs.
Furthermore, bundled with the computer will be a Jetpack 3.0, a software development kit that helps write programs that take advantage of the GPU on board. This Jetpack 3.0 comes with deep-learning kits like TensorRT and parallel programming frameworks like CUDA.
The TX2 module will be available for $399 in Q2 from NVIDIA and its distributors around the world. The Jetson TX1 Developer Kit has been reduced to $499.
The NVIDIA Jetson TX2 Developer Kit, which comes with the carrier board and TX2 module, can be preordered today for $599 in Europe and United States and shipping will begin March 14. It will be offered in other regions in the upcoming weeks.
