Android 8.0, likely called Android "Oreo," is underway and will be available soon. A recent leak reveals that the upcoming operating system will have three exciting new features!
According to a report by BGR via Yahoo! News, the latest figures from the Android Developers site reveal that only two percent of Android users have migrated to Android 7.0 These figures have not prevented Google from releasing new versions of its OS every year. And as reported last time, it was revealed that the company's senior VP showed a new dessert teaser on his Twitter account.
Hiroshi Lockheimer, a.k.a. @dcseifert on Twitter, tweeted a photo of an Oreo cheesecake on Feb. 19. Apart from the likelihood of the Android Oreo teaser, how many other desserts actually start with the letter O? Many would agree that "Oreo" would come to mind. However, this is still unconfirmed. Previously, everyone believed that Android "K" stood for "Key Lime Pie" but in the end, it was released as "Kit Kat."
While it is unlikely for Google to spoil the name of the latest Android O so early, could the latest Android 8.0 Oreo be the real deal? Perhaps it is, or maybe the Google senior VP is just trolling his followers. In the past, Lockheimer has given some misleading information to throw the public off about the latest Android name.
According to another report by Venture Beat, three new features will likely form a part of the Android 8 update later this year. These features are "Copy Less," automatic Google Maps contact locator, and finger gestures.
The Copy Less feature will allegedly cut down on the annoyance of copying text from one app only to paste it in another. It was not mentioned if the new feature would come with Google's standard issue Gboard virtual keyboard app or on the Android 8 OS itself.
The second new feature builds on Google's past efforts to automate actions in other apps on Android. Additionally, Gboard recently got the ability to search for and share contact information. Similar to what Apple enhanced iMessage app for iOS offers, the new Android 8.0 will reportedly have this feature. This new ability will automatically share location via Google Maps and suggest addresses and phone numbers from one's contacts.
Finally, finger gestures that trigger actions across Android could also come in the future. Huawei's Mate 9 already has a similar "Knuckle 2.0" feature that allows users to open apps with the use of their knuckles. Similarly, Apple has 3D Touch gesture on iOS as well. However, the new gesture triggers could come later or may not come at all.
It looks like the new Android 8.0 Oreo leaks seem to point to the new Google operating system becoming more like Apple's iOS. While Android does offer some great features, a lot of users like the innovation of the iOS. If the new Android 8 is more like iOS, would more users switch to Android?
