The new Android 8.0 will likely be called "Oreo." More importantly, Android O is under development and could be available soon.
In a report by Know Your Mobile, the site revealed that the new version of Android is already under development. While Android 7.0 Nougat was only recently made available, the new Android operating system is already in the works. Nougat was a 2016 operating system while Android O is the 2017 release.
Android 8.0 Oreo? The new operating system will be the eighth major Android release. There has been a lot of speculation on what the possible name could be and all roads seem to lead to "Oreo."
Many believe that the name has already been confirmed, more or less. Google's Senior Vice President of Android, Chrome OS, and Google Play, Hiroshi Lockheimer a.k.a. dcseifert, recently tweeted a picture of an Oreo cake on Feb. 19. Apart from the obvious tease, just how many desserts start with the letter O? The only one that really comes to mind is Oreo.
However, it could also be possible that Lockheimer wanted to confuse everyone with his alleged Android 8.0 tweet. In the past, Android "K" was first believed to be "Key Lime Pie" before it actually released as "Kit Kat." Lockheimer has also given previous leaks in the past, and those also misled the public into believing they had some new insight about the new Android name. But in the end, it would appear that the Google SVP was just trolling his followers.
Android O Release Date. The next Android OS will likely be available by this year's Google I/O. The event is set to take place from May 17 to 19 at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California. The company may even have a developer preview by then. Of course, it is possible that Android 8.0 will be announced earlier like what happened with Android N last year.
In all likelihood, the official release will be sometime in August or September. The first phones to probably get the new Android OS will be Google flagship phones like the new Pixel. These smartphones will likely have Android O preinstalled. The other main flagship phones from Samsung, LG, and HTC will likely get the new Oreo OS in 2018.
Android 8.0 will likely have a lot of new and exciting features. But at the moment, we know next to nothing and can only speculate about its name. Considering all the new features that the latest smartphones will bring this year, it's safe to assume that Android O will also be bringing something amazing as well. What do you think?
