"Outlander" stars Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan are living proof that working with animals can be quite tricky, especially if you expect them to "act" a certain way. At a recently held panel discussion at the Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle, the two excitedly told fans that season 1 should have had a scene that involved wrestling with wolves. However, that part was eventually edited out.
While dealing with wolves isn't really a strange occurence in the "Outlander" universe, acting with them is another story. The show's writers originally planned on a scene with a face-to-face encounter with these wild creatures. However, the directors decided to take it out altogether after one of the main actors literally got attacked on set, writes Vulture.
Tim McInnerny, who plays Father Bain in "Outlander," was expected to be in a book-based scene where a wolf bit his leg during an attack. He uses this injury to go against Claire and support his witch hunt theories, claiming that she called it upon him and summoned the animals. However, the shoot turned out to be life-threatening disaster.
"It was quite horrific," said Balfe at the panel. "He actually got attacked by dogs." The actress added that while the book version was exciting to read, it was hardly executable in real life. Her character was also supposed to have a scene where she fights off a lone wolf after being driven out of Wentworth Prison. But after what happened to her co-star, "Outlander" producers decided to just skip the wolf acting business totally.
"I would have loved to," she noted, adding that it could have been one of the most bad-ass moments she'll ever have on the series. "It's such an amazing thing to read, but you can't do it in reality."
"I think that would have been kind of fun," Sam Heughan then teased his co-star at the same Comic-Con panel. To which, Balfe replied confidently, yet jokingly, that she knew she had the chops to take a wolf down herself. Watch the rest of panel on Twitch.
"Outlander" is not the first TV series to admit that wolves are a dangerous animal to produce a show with. In fact, fans of the mega-hit HBO series "Game of Thrones" also acknowledged this challenge by reducing the number of direwolf appearances. However, it seems that Nymeria, Arya Stark's (Maisie Williams) beloved pet, might appear in Season 7, which airs in April.
"Outlander" season 3 premieres in September this year on Starz. The story is based on a series of eight sci-fi and fantasy novels by Diana Gabaldon published in 1991.
