Kong: Skull Island is a movie about a team of explorers and soldiers who travel to an uncharted island in the Pacific. They are completely unaware that they are crossing into the domain of monsters, including the mythic Kong.
The biggest surprise about Kong: Skull Island is that it is better than Jurassic World. The entire movie takes place on Kong’s jungle island. He doesn’t scale any skyscrapers. The movie is more action-based than either of the King Kong remakes.
According to Variety, "Kong: Skull Island" is set in 1973, just as Watergate is heating up and the Vietnam War is winding down. John Goodman who plays Bill Randa heard some rumors about something hidden away on an uncharted South Pacific island. He convinces a senator to provide a government funding for a field mission there. He also required a few military men. Preston Packard played by Samuel L. Jackson, is a U.S military commander who is smarting from the humiliation of America in Vietnam. James Conrad played by Tom Hiddleston is a renegade British mercenary. Mason Weaver played by Brie Larson is just a free-spirited antiwar photographer.
IGN reported that "Kong: Skull Island" manages to give the King Kong character something more. He has a pre-existing reputation and mythology before he even sets foot off of his beloved homeland. He is a god to the native people of Skull Island. He protects them from other dangerous creatures that roam the land.
When the crew approached Skull Island, they immediately started bombing with their helicopters to try and map the terrain of the island.
Once they started with the bombings, Kong: Skull Island emerges from the mountains and displays his status and power. The director, Jordan Vogt-Roberts and his technical team did an exceptional job at following up that first sequence with other interesting, and continuously different set pieces. They portray Kong by showing off his power and design with a confidence that only makes this version of Kong seem that much terrifying and dangerous. On the other side, the film’s characters and emotional moments don’t match up to the visual and stylistic aspects of the film. A lot of that can be contributed to the fact that Skull Island has many main and supporting characters than any other, non-superhero blockbuster.
According to The Guardian, the dramatic presence Kong himself is messy. The movie gives away the Kong’s physical appearance way too early, thus blowing the suspense. The movie tries way too hard to make him the island’s noble-savage idol, the good guy, as opposed to the huge baddie lizards that are kept in check by the mighty Kong. Kong: Skull Island sets out to deliver a monster movie filled with the kind of action and destruction that the audiences have never seen from a King Kong film before.
