David Tamberrino implicates that reservation holders won’t see the Tesla Model 3 until 2018. He also believes that Tesla later this year may face a cash crunch and will need to borrow additional capital to help with the Model 3 production. Currently, there is no evidence that backs up his claim.
According to Boy Genius Report, Tamberrino’s take on Tesla Model 3 production goes against a number of public statements Tesla has made over the past few months. Tesla remains determined that Model 3 production is still on track, and that deliveries will begin in earnest by late 2017. Tesla aims to deliver a minimum of 100,000 Model 3 vehicles to employees and early reservation holders in 2017.
On the other side, Tesla has been known for delaying their shipments. They have a poor track record when it comes to meeting ambitious target ship dates. The Model S and Model X shipped far later than anticipated. However, Tesla Supply Chain chief Peter Carisson reported that the Tesla Model 3 will be the first Tesla vehicle to actually ship on time. Its manufacturing process is a lot simpler than the Model X. Tesla is also equipped with more sophisticated production equipment that will help speed up the manufacturing process and improve the overall build quality.
USA Today reported that Tesla stock drops 11% from its February 13 high of $280. Some of the reasons for the drop in stock is the potential delay of Model3, and accusations toward Elon Musk from his employees. Jose Moran, a former employee at Tesla wrote a blog post about the excruciating work conditions at Tesla’s Freemont, California manufacturing facility.
According to Elon Musk, the charges were unfounded, and he promised future improvements to factory life. David Tamberrino sees a profitable way forward for Tesla. They need to demonstrate improved manufacturing execution by driving more rapid quarterly production growth in its current vehicle offerings. They also need to demonstrate cross-selling potential between Tesla products and SolarCity products.
