As far as self-driving vehicles are concerned, it is seen that every auto company is scrambling to make some of their own and ensure it is safe. Most of the vehicles that are talked about are regarding transporting people. This is when Ford comes up with the vision of using automation in transporting goods.
The concept that Ford formed is a part of its vision called "The City of Tomorrow." This vision aims at reducing congestion on the roads and to open up more green space in the cities. It will benefit people as there will be much more lung space around. The automaker envisions creating many other options for transportation and many more delivery options including bikes, drones, and ride-hailing vehicles.
There are many prototypes that are available that will transport people using self-driving vehicles. Ford, through its Autolivery concept, has created a vision which will make use of autonomous technology to transport goods. This concept involves the use of self-driving vehicles and drones working hand-in-hand, reported Motor Trend.
To explain further, the Autolivery concept looks at making use of electric self-driving vans with deployable drones. The drones will fly straight to the customer's doorstep to make the delivery and drop off a parcel.
"While the scene shown today is not yet possible, 'Autolivery' suggests how our ongoing mobility research could enrich our lives in a more sustainable 'City of Tomorrow'," said Ken Washington, Ford's vice president of Research and Advanced Engineering, reported Auto Breaking News.
If the concept materializes, it can solve the biggest challenges that the delivery companies face when it has to deliver goods in high-rise buildings. It is still unclear as to when the concept will come to life. In the beginning, the vehicles will be designated for commercial application. It will be mostly used for ride-hailing, ride sharing, or package delivery fleets.
Along with Ford, there are other automakers who are interested in making drone-launching vehicles. Mercedes came up with its Vision Van concept last year. It won't be long before other automakers join the race.
