If the Oscars still dominate the web with the mishap with one of the major awards, the Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona, Spain had its own show stealers and big reveals. After a long parade of press conferences, the conference has proven to be a massive hit in the tech world.
There are many exciting reveals but none came close to the revival of the Nokia 3310 phone. Engadget reports that Nokia acknowledges that this model is "the most meme-ed phone" most of which are referencing to its durability and battery life. Even with the added tweaks to the original model, it is hard not to have a throwback moment with the well-loved phone.
Meanwhile, South Korean telecommunications giants LG and Samsung have had their moments in different ways. While being notably "absent" in the mobile phone showcase as noted by CNET, LG takes the spotlight with its LG G6. In the meantime, Samsung managed to make a statement with its tablets and a confirmation of the Galaxy S8 launch with a twist of unexpected Greenpeace protester.
The protester interrupted Samsung's presentation at the MWC to reiterate the importance of recycling. This is related to the recall of 4.3 million Galaxy Note 7s defective units in 2016. Greenpeace pointed out that Samsung has not made clear of its plans regarding the recalled units.
Moving on to more of the good news, Asiacell, a mobile phone provider in Iraq made a Wikipedia-related announcement in its presentation. BBC reports that no mobile data charges will be incurred by users in Iraq when they access Wikipedia. As a part of their Wikipedia Zero project that kicked off in 2012, Wikimedia Foundation claims this effort is to make knowledge available to as many people as possible through their well-known and widely-used website.
Other notable reveals include the Blackberry return to the Smartphone game through its KeyOne handset and the Porsche Design's Windows 2-in-1 convertible which is a close competition to Microsoft Surface Book 2016.
Presentations, showcases, and announcements like the March 29 Samsung Galaxy S8 launch and the data-free Wikipedia in Iraq starting on February 28, the Mobile World Congress 2017 was a success all in all. The event was not as dramatic as the Best Picture announcement in the 89th Academy Awards but it sure satisfied tech-savvy fans and promised a brighter future in the tech industry.
