New Renault RS17 Was Displayed on Tuesday Afternoon. Renault has launched their latest 2017 F1 car, the RS17. After not so great results in 2016, Renault believes that their new engine and a change of philosophy will help them achieve greater success than last year.
Telegraph reported that the car was launched live online at 15:00 GMT on Tuesday afternoon. At first glance, the most noticeable design change of the RS17 was the inclusion of a thumb-style nosecone, which was the most rejected concept in recent years.
Renault also used the event to welcome the former driver and four-time champion Alain Prost to their staff as a special advisor. Prost said that the big tires of the FS17 remind him of the old days. Drivers Jolyon Palmer and Nico Hulkenberg had the honor to pull the sheet and reveal the RS17.
The 2017 model comes with brighter yellow livery and more focus on the black at the rear of the car. According to Cyril Abiteboul, the managing director at Renault F1, the team has been very aggressive with the design of a fresh engine for the new model.
Renault hopes that they can overcome the lack of performance in 2016 when they finished 9th in the constructors championship. Renault also swapped Kevin Magnussen for Hulkenberg in hopes that they can help the German to finally make good on his promises.
According to Auto Sport, Red Bull Principal Christian Horner believes that with the new engine from Renault, they can finally be a challenge and give Mercedes and Ferrari a hard time. The team to beat is Mercedes, as they have raised the bar high.
Mercedes has been world champion three times so far. He said that if Renault can get within 3% of the performance of F1’s pacesetting engine, his team will have no problem taking the fight to Mercedes. He also said that their driver line-up is fantastic, and there is great stability in the team. The car is expected to hit the track for testing at Barcelona next week.
