Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors, has announced today that his Tesla Model S P100D could leave other sports car models in the dust.
The billionaire businessman just tweeted that the P100D will be given over-the-air software updates that would boost the car's zero 60mph sprint in just 2.4 seconds.
In what is called a "purely software optimization," current Tesla Model S P100D cars will get an even more much-needed boost that would turn to be even faster than conventional fossil-fueled vehicles out in the commercial market today. Musk said the speed boost would make the Tesla Model S P100D cover a quarter mile in just 10.6 seconds. As a reference, a McLaren P1 can cover the same area in 10.1 seconds, a clear indication of the massive performance the Tesla Model S P100 has to offer, Auto Express reported.
Since the start of the company more than 13 years ago, starting with its Tesla Roadster Electric car in 2008, Elon Musk has always been a firm believer that electric cars are the way of the future and that the fastest car that one can buy will eventually be electric, not gasoline engines. As of date, the company has reported more than 164,000 cars sold worldwide despite some detractors and pessimism of car critics in the automobile industry.
While Tesla cars do not come in cheap, it aims to eventually offer electric cars that are affordable for the average driving consumer. In the US, the Tesla Model S P100 starts at $134,500 with options at an additional price and the Model X P100D at $135,500.
Tesla aims to install a network of high-powered superchargers across most of North America, Europe and Asia and is in negotiations to install chargers in restaurants and other venues. This will make it easier for Tesla car owners to charge their cars without having to look across considerable distances to charge up their vehicles.
