Tesla has a new glass technology division called the Tesla Glass technology group that focuses on glass development and that the innovative type of glass they developed for the solar roof may also be incorporated in the upcoming Tesla Model 3.
According to Electrek, Elon Musk confirmed his company's glass technology group over a phone call while discussing the company's new solar roof and its difference from previous products that have failed in the solar industry.
"It is using a lot of techniques from the automotive glass business and, in case it wasn't obvious with the announcement, Tesla has created a glass technology group with some really phenomenal people," Musk said on the call.
Tesla refers to this glass as 'Tesla Glass' tile. Musk added that the first application of the Tesla Glass will be on the Model 3. He didn't elaborate further, but he did offer some insight about it in his Twitter account. He said that the solar glass tiles can incorporate heating elements to clear snow and keep generating energy. The glass could then be used for a number of things, like a solar roof for the Model 3 or to make it as its windshield.
The Model 3 will be the company's entry-level model when it goes in full sale end of 2017; set to be its cheapest model yet promises to deliver the same ownership experience as the company's more expensive cars. In fact, since its unveiling in March, a number of potential customers have placed £1,000 deposit on Musk's anticipated new car. As of May 15, 2016, Tesla had taken about 373,000 reservations.
When it was revealed, the Model 3 featured a large, panoramic glass roof. We've seen the car's pre-production design but that's what we know so far; surely there's more information to come before manufacturing begins next summer. Maybe it's still a concept design, so let's wait and see how much 'Tesla Glass' the real car ends up with.
