Mitsubishi Motors will have a new plug-in hybrid SUV on show at Paris which it is claiming to be its 'next generation SUV'. The company also stated the new SUV concept would serve as the focal point of its Paris outing, which again can be seen as a clear hint of it hitting production lines soon enough.
Mitsubishi GT-PHEV Concept
The new GT-PHEV Concept is also being presented as a high-end SUV that's designed to be a long-hauler, capable of munching away miles after miles without battling an eyelid. Towards that, there is going to be a three electric motor setup assisting a normally aspirated gasoline engine which the automakers said has been specifically designed for hybrid roles.
One of the electric motors would be sitting on top of the front axle, which together with the engine would be powering the front set of wheels. The remaining two electric motors are located on the rear axle, providing power to the rear wheels, claimed Motor Authority. A high capacity battery forms the last leg of the hybrid setup.
Mitsubishi GT-PHEV Concept Features
Mitsubishi claimed the GT-PHEV will be able to traverse 120 miles (75 kms) on battery power alone. That makes for an impressive figure for an SUV-sized vehicle though it being based on the NEDC standard, experts believes the real world figure could be a few notches below that, Electrek reported.
In any case, a combined gasoline plus electric range of 750 miles or 1200 kms is being projected for the GT-PHEV.
Power gets transferred to all four wheels via the vehicle dynamics control system that helps precise distribution of torque to the wheels as needed.
Looks wise, the GT-PHEV is radical at its best. While opinions on this can be subjective, the front end with its outlandish lines has divided many. What seems certain is that the GT-PHEV concept will serve as a technology demonstrator and will spawn off other road going versions. Let's just hope the actual production versions are better looking for an otherwise promising hybrid SUV.
