Audi, a German car manufacturer company has just recently showcased its newly developed technology that claims to enable vehicles to talk to traffic lights. The technology is referred to as V to I or Vehicle to Infrastructure technology. This will be out in the fourth quarter of 2017, and for new vehicle models that will be built after June of 2016.
WiFi connectivity is very important as this is the one that links the vehicle and the traffic lights. The information that is coming from the traffic light is then transferred to the system that is present inside the vehicle.
The driver will then see in the HUD display or an LCD display the countdown before the lights change or whether the driver is still capable of reaching the traffic light before the lights change.
The display then turns off after a couple of seconds, as the lights turn green. This is made to give the driver focus on the driving.
Pom Malhotra, the general manager of the vehicles that are working for Audi says in a statement: "If you just think about the number of intersections that you pass through, and you think about the accumulated anxiety, accumulated stress that happens because of these, it's information like this."
He also adds: "that allows your mind to relax and basically, say, 'All right. I have some time here. I can be doing other things instead of readying myself to jump on the accelerator. "This is our foray into V-to-I. This is designed not as a safety feature but a comfort and convenience feature."
This newly developed technology is said to be out to the public by the end of 2016 and will be resent in 7 cities across the U.S. In the mean time, the names of the cities are still not officially publicized.
One of the most important things that Audi must ensure to be successful is the cooperation of the communications infrastructures as well as the support of the government and transportation agencies. The possibility that this will become a reality in the very near future is very high.
