An infant boy that is 6 months old died after being left inside an SUV in a Wal-Mart parking lot. The SUV air conditioning was turned off along with its engine, leaving the baby to die in the heat.
According to Janette Fennel, the founder, and president of KidsAndCars.org, there are already 27 cases where children have died inside hot cars due to suffocation and heat. The organization is a national child safety non-profit one that aims to increase the awareness of people with regard to the issue. The statistics increased from 15 cases last year.
According to the statement of Capt. Anthony Burges, a Helotes police, the father of the child works at a store in Helotes and that he allegedly tells the officers that he had forgotten to send off his son at the day care center before he went to work at 6:15 a.m. on Friday.
The father then found his child dead inside the vehicle as soon as he returned to it after 3 p.m. The temperature in the place has reached 100 degrees in the afternoon.
Burges also tells that the child's father was sent to the nearby hospital as he experienced chest pains, probably due to the shocking surprise that his child has died because of him. There are no charges that are filed.
The name of the child's father is not released to the public by the officers. Fennell says that this is a possible occurrence as children are strapped into the back seats, and if they are silent enough, the driver can forget that there is a child on board.
Statistics also prove that there are an average 37 deaths per year since 1998. The highest number of incidents was on 2010 where there were 48 hot car child deaths recorded by Fennell and Jan Null. The two are research meteorologists based in San Jose State University.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office states and identifies that the recently died 6-month-old infant as Dillon Martinez who is from San Antonio.
