The new Ford Mustang was recently named the best-selling sports car in the world in 2015, defeating the Audi TT and Porsche 911 in the process.
The American-made Mustang beat the German-made Porsche 911 by 780 to 752 units, and the German-made Audi TT by 780 to 708 units.
The Ford Mustang is actually more expensive than the Audi TT, AutoBlog notes. The 2.3-liter EcoBoost coupe is priced at around $43,300 while the V8 engine Mustang GT costs around $49,000, compared to the front-drive Audi TT, which costs around $41,000. Buyers would easily add $2,000 to have the 310 or 425hp of the Ford Mustang than the 220hp of the Audi TT.
The Porsche 911, however, is about double the price of the Mustang. Buyers would also easily prefer the much cheaper cost of the Mustang over the Porsche 911 Carrera. The Porsche Boxster and Cayman Twin Turbo sold 642 units combined.
The Audi TT was the bestselling sports car in Germany from January to March 2016, having sold 2,299 units compared to Ford with 1,823. Porsche sold 1,811 units, which is not far behind. The March figures are expected to change through 2016 as more competitors join the market.
he Ford Mustang coupe sold 110,000 units in 2015, and 30,000 convertibles, according to CarThrottle. It was the bestselling sports coupe worldwide and is the only car of its kind to have sold over 100,000 units around the world. The strategy to make the Ford Mustang available in 140 countries appears to be helping its reputation and the company as a whole.
Erich Merkle, sales analyst at Ford, said that the V8 engine Mustang is still popular among drivers. He explained that although much of the increase in Mustang demand in the United States originated from coastal markets, especially Southern California, as millennials choose the 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine, the V8 model is still much preferred in other countries. The V8 has sold the most in the United Kingdom. Other countries that prefer the V8 include Australia, New Zealand and Germany.
BoldRide writes that the new Ford Mustang is currently sold out in Australia through the 2017 model year. 2,000 additional models will be delivered to the continent to meet client demands. As for Chinese buyers, they prefer the 2.3-lietter four-cylinder EcoBoost to avoid higher taxes imposed on bigger displacement engines in their country.
More updates and details on the new Ford Mustang are expected soon.
