2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Receive Five-Star Safety Ratings (VIDEO)

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, High Country, and GMC Sierra and Sierra Denali 1500 became the first pickup trucks to receive a five-star Overall Vehicle Score for safety since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration adjusted its New Car Assessment Program.

The NHTSA only tested crew-cab models of the Silverado and Sierra. GM said that crew-cab vehicles account for 60 percent of 2014 light duty full-size pickup truck sales.

"Safety is as important to truck buyers as it is to car buyers," said Gay Kent, GM general director of Vehicle Safety and Crashworthiness, in a press statement. "Silverado and Sierra set a benchmark for pickup truck safety by offering a full array of advanced features designed to protect occupants before, during and after a collision."

GM offers Sierra and Silverado pickups with fully boxed frames and safety features like Forward Collision Alert, Safety Alert Seat and Lane Departure Warning.

Lane Departure Warning technology lets a driver know when the truck drifts over a lane line when going over 35 mph.

Six-standard air bags and a 360-degree sensor system is also standard.

OnStar Service is also available for the trucks, as drivers can use GPS and their cell phones to call for help if a crash takes place. The service also includes MyLink mobile aps according to GM.
