Mercedes-Benz is offering an F1 engine for the small cost of $3 million. And yes, it is entirely street-legal.
Nobody knows yet for sure what the Mercedes-AMG hypercar will look like. However, details about its impressive features are slowly coming to surface. For starters, it's said to be built with a Formula One powertrain with 1,000 horsepower and an engine that revs up to 11,000 RPM.
Top Gear recently reported that Mercedes-AMG head Tobias Moers said the car would be named the "Project One." It will cost £2.37 million including tax. Based on Auto World News' computation, that is roughly around $2.9 million to $3 million at the current exchange rate.
Who knows how much more it would cost once it goes on sale by 2019? According to reports, it will be street-legal by that time.
When it comes to exclusivity, Mercedes will only make 275 of these "Project One" hypercars. Under the hood, the Project One hypercar's 1.6-liter turbo V6 engine will be paired with four electric motors.
In an interview with Autocar, Moers revealed that the engine would power each of the front wheels, the crankshaft, and the engine turbocharger. However, it will only last 31,000 miles before needing a rework or replacement.
Does that sound absurd? Maybe. According to Motoring, this is what Tobias Moers said in his statement.
On the bright side, 31,000 miles don't get put on these kinds of cars often, so it could actually be practical. In fact, Auto World News salutes Moers for his honesty. After all, it's not like every car manufacturer jumps at the chance to let their audience in on how long its performance engines last.
The street-legal F1 "Project One" is set to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Stay tuned to Auto World News for more updates.
