Will AMD Radeon Vega GPU See Huge Competition with the NVIDIA Volta?

The upcoming AMD Radeon Vega GPU will reportedly see a May 30th release date. While it was all set to dominate the newly released GTX 1080 Ti, it looks like the Vega will soon see some competition in the NVIDIA Volta.

The NVIDIA GTX 1080 Ti was officially launched at the GDC 2017. According to reports, it trumps the performance of the high-end Titan X. However, a lot of other reports stated that the AMD Radeon Vega GPU would be superior to the GTX 1080 Ti.

In a recent report by Fudzilla, rumors have been circulating about the NVIDIA Volta. It will allegedly outperform the AMD Radeon Vega GPU with its Taiwan Semiconductor 12nm fabrication process over Vega's 14 nm.

Similar to the Vega 10, the rumors state that the 12nm process of the Volta can achieve 15 percent performance improvement while consuming 50 percent less power than the 16 nm process. How will it measure up to the AMD Vega GPU's 14 nm? That has yet to be tested.

Moreover, the report further states that the upcoming Pascal successor will be working with TSMC. Its updated 16nm design could definitely outperform the Vega 10. It will also use GDDR6 memory similar to Vega's HBM2. It is expected to deliver speeds of 16 GBPS from the 10 GBPS in the GTX 1080's GDDRX5. Speaking for the GTX 1080, one of NVIDIA's keynote announcement was a massive price drop in GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 models which are already happening now!

The first traces of the upcoming AMD Vega killer were reportedly spotted, according to Kit Guru. AIDA64 posted on Facebook that a chip bearing the "GV100" name circulated. However, this report is unconfirmed and is definitely too soon.

The AMD Radeon Vega GPU will launch in May and is touted to outperform the NVIDIA GTX 1080 Ti. However, the new Volta won't appear until much later and will likely be a part of the GTX 30 series. The new GTX 20 series will be a Pascal refreshed GPU range that will be launched later this year. It could be too late, and there is also no information yet about how it will perform against a Vega 10 GPU.
