Dog Shoots Owner In The Leg While Riding In A Truck, Avoids Criminal Charges

A Florida man was shot in the leg by a 9 mm pistol on a car ride by his dog according to the Highlands Today.

Gregory Lanier, 35, of Sebring, F.L. wasn't aware that the gun placed on the floor of his truck was loaded until his dog accidentally kicked it. The gun then fired a bullet into Lanier's leg.

Sebring police determined the shooting was an accident, and Lanier was not seriously injured according to the police report.

Sebring Police Officer Steve Carr did not arrest nor detain the dog, but they have started an investigation on the matter. Lainer wasn't charged or arrested as well.

"Lanier said he heard boom, saw smoke and felt a burning in his leg," Carr said according to the Examiner. "His dog kicked his unloaded pistol causing it to fire and the bullet struck his leg. Lanier said he heard a "boom," saw smoke, and felt a burning in his leg seconds later."

The dog's owner claims they were not fighting at the time and his pet was just roaming around the vehicle. Lainer thought the gun was in the bed of his pickup truck, and feels fortunate the bullet didn't strike him in another location on his body.

Lainer and his dog were driving on State Road 17 North when the incident occurred according to Highlands Today.

This is at least the second case to occur in the last three years where a dog was involved in a shooting. In 2011, a yellow Labrador from Utah jumped onto a 12-gauge shotgun, firing 27 pellets into its owner.

Just last week however, a Florida woman reportedly was shot by her friend's oven when trying to cook waffles according to the Tampa Bay Times. The woman was pre-heating an oven, unaware her friend had stored a .45-caliber Glock 21 magazine inside. The magazine exploded, hitting the woman with casing fragments according to the report.

She was taken to the hospital and released a few days later.
