Former Olympic BMX rider Kyle Bennett was killed in an auto accident in Texas on Sunday. He was 33.

Bennett was driving his 2006 Toyota Tundra pickup truck on Sunday when the vehicle left the roadway while easily traveling over the legal speed limit. The truck then hit a wrought iron gate, a culvert pipe and multiple trees before it finally stopping upside down in a ditch according to the Montgomery County police report.

Police were able to get Bennett out of the vehicle, but he had already passed by the time they arrived.

Bennett reportedly was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. He was most likely speeding due to someone breaking in to his fiancées car according to the police report.

"Rest in peace to father, friend, Olympian, multi-World Champion, hall of famer, legend, and all around awesome person with such effortless style and flow, Kyle Bennett," said Derek Betcher, a fellow BMX rider to ESPN. "I was always so inspired by watching you ride, and equally inspired by your humble personality. I'll remember all the good times, my friend. You'll be forever missed."

Bennett was one of the most accomplished BMX cyclists during the last decade having won three Union Cycliste Internationale championships and three National Cycle League championships. His accomplishments granted him an automatic spot on the first ever Olympic BMX team in 2008.

His most recent accomplishment included making the BMX Hall of Fame this past summer as part of the 2008 U.S. Olympic BMX Team.

Shortly after his death made headlines, officials said hundreds of people gathered outside the Kyle Bennett Armadillo BMX Park to hold a vigil.

There were no passengers in the truck and no other vehicles were involved in the accident.
