Comedian Jay Leno will return to television next year to host a new series about cars, the cable network CNBC said on Wednesday.
Leno stepped down as anchor of "The Tonight Show" after 20 years back in February.
The new show, tentatively titled "Jay Leno's Garage," will be based on his Emmy Award-winning web series. Leno will share his love of vehicles on the new show, which is set to premiere next year, according to Reuters.
"The show will be about anything that rolls, explodes and makes noise," Leno, 64, said in a statement. "We hope to highlight the passion and the stories behind the men and women who made the automobile the greatest invention of the 20th century."
Leno is considered one of the biggest car collectors in the United States, as he owns an extensive array of hundreds of vehicles and motorcycles.
The new series follows "Jay Leno's Garage: the Ultimate Car Week," special, which aired back in August on CNBC. The special was the first TV appearance for Leno since he left the "Tonight Show."
"Jay will add tremendous star power and exceptional content to CNBC's prime time at the perfect time," said network President Mark Hoffman, according to the Associated Press. "We're really excited Jay will continue his storied career with the NBC family and with us at CNBC."
Fellow comedian and former "Saturday Night Live cast member Jimmy Fallon replaced Leno as the show's host and moved it from California back to New York.
CNBC is known for its daytime coverage of the world of finance and business, but it has been challenged to attract an audience in the evenings as of late. In order to try bringing in viewers, the channel has tried reality shows and repeats of ABC program "Shark Tank."
Though the network's audience has dropped significantly since its coverage of the financial crisis in 2008, ratings have increased since 2013.
