The 2015 Ford Mustang hits dealerships next month, a model the automaker hopes will appeal to both longtime fans and a new audience.
The new Mustang's engine options include a four-cylinder, a V-6 and a V-8, all of which generate at least 300 horsepower, USA TODAY reported. The 2015 model, which comes with either a six-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic, marks Ford's first independent rear suspension and will also be the first Mustang to be sold in Europe and Asia.
Now in the sixth generation, the Mustang needs to maintain purist fans while drawing in new buyers.
"Everything you do that changes the vehicle runs the risk of alienating someone," said Raj Nair, Ford's product development chief, as quoted by the Los Angeles Times. "People that are amazingly passionate about every aspect of the vehicle."
When it comes to new technology, the 2015 Mustang offers more inside tech systems and safety options including adaptive cruise control, blind spot alerts and forward collision warning.
Ford expects around 40 percent of buyers to purchase the Mustang GT option, while the majority of the other 60 percent will probably get the EcoBoost version.
About 400 pounds lighter compared with the GT, the EcoBoost runs on a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine generating 310 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque. Its fuel economy rating is 21 miles per gallon for city driving, while the automatic transmission version gets 32 mpg on the highway.
The Mustang equipped with the 3.7-liter V6 engine produces 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, and the 5-liter V8 engine option generates 435 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque.
The base V6 option is expected to be in demand in the U.S., while the four-cylinder EcoBoost model will probably be popular overseas, USA TODAY reported.
