Apple has officially invited media to a "special event" in its hometown of Cupertino, California, on Sept. 9, when the company is expected to debut the latest iPhone.

Apple's cryptic invitation reads: "Wish we could say more." It was delivered on a black-and-white background dominated by the iPhone-maker's corporate logo.

The launch date for the next iPhone has been a source for date the past couple of months.

The company is expected to debut a larger 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhones at the event, a move that could be driven in part by the success of larger devices by rivals like Samsung Electronics.

Apple is also expected to introduce its long-awaited smartwatch at the event as well.

The company usually uses its September events to showcase its most important products. The device accounts for half of Apple's business and is gaining more prominence as tablet sales decline.

As stunning as it seems, Apple hasn't introduced a new product since the iPad back in 2010.

Company CEO Tim Cook has repeatedly promised new product categories for 2014 however. Apple's software chief Eddy Cue has said the company's product pipeline is the best he's seen "in decades," according to Reuters.

It remains unclear whether or not the company will debut another gadget or two at the highly-anticipated event.

Rumored specs for the next iPhone includes: 1704 x 960 pixel resolution, a faster A8 processor, camera upgrades, and a more durable, sapphire screen.

If the company follows its normal launch schedule, Apple fans can expect the iPhone 6 to be released on Sept. 19.

Apple has also been discussing its "HealthKit" service with health providers and apps developers, Reuters reported citing "people familiar with the discussions."

They confirmed that HealthKit will become the lynchpin in a broader push into digital and mobile healthcare, a field that Samsung and Google are also looking into.
