Connecticut Bird Populations Are Declining Since Habitats Are Disappearing

Connecticut bird habitats are disappearing, which could have a big impact on bird populations, according to advocates in the area.

The Connecticut Audubon Society said recently that populations of local bird species are dropping due to the elimination of birds' habitat, according to their annual report.

The report also claims that there are no accurate measurements of how much open space is available in Connecticut.

"Cove Island Park (in Stamford) has a protected wildlife sanctuary, an unprotected woods frequented by dog walkers, softball fields, tennis courts and large mowed lawns surrounded by walkways, as well as beach and shoreline," said Stephen B. Oresman, chairman emeritus of the Connecticut Audubon Society, according to NewsTimes.com. "On a map, it is probably all counted as open space."

Orseman, who wrote the opening essay of the report, added that open space and wildlife habit are not always the same thing. For example, gold courses can obtain an open space status, but it would be close to impossible for animals to live there.

Susan Whalen, who is the deputy commissioner at the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, said to fix this, agencies need to work together, otherwise nothing will get done.

"It takes a coordinated approach to re-establish these grasslands and shrublands," said Whalen, according to NewsTimes.com. "The Department of Forestry, the Department of Wildlife and the Department of Inland Fisheries are all involved."

Local legislature needs to address these issues as well. Orseman believes more needs to be done, especially in locations that humans don't find attractive, like meadows and scrubland.

These locations are homes for a number of animals, including birds, and destroying them would only hurt local animal populations.
