Launching this week, the redesigned 2016 Mazda 2 is expected to arrive in dealerships in mid-2015, Edmunds.com reported. The new model made its global debut on Wednesday in Japan.
The subcompact hatchback, which will be on sale in Japan this fall, runs on either a Skyactiv-G 1.3-liter gasoline engine or a Skyactiv-D 1.5-liter clean diesel engine. Edmunds notes that both engine options may or may not be available in the U.S.
The redesigned 2016 Mazda 2 is a spinoff of the Mazda Hazumi Concept featured at the 2014 Geneva Auto Show. The car's specifications in the U.S. will be revealed closer to when it is shipped here.
The new hatchback will showcase a "design language to match its larger siblings, the Mazda 3, Mazda 6 and CX-5," Mazda announced. Pricing has yet to be announced for the U.S. version, but the hatchback will probably start at around $16,000.
"The stylish redesign, which features more curvaceous lines, a bulging hood and a larger grille, is calculated to shake up the market for small, practical runabouts," Edmunds described.
The new Mazda 2 is expected to include more safety and connectivity functions, including the Mazda Connect technology suite, which has service reminders, a navigation system and an infotainment system.
Called the Demio in Japan, the Mazda 2 competes with the 2015 Chevrolet Spark, Fiat 500, Ford Fiesta and Honda Fit.
