Mazda North American Operations has announced that it is recalling over 2008-'11 Mazda Tribute SUVs over an issue with the vehicle's power steering assist, according to a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"The affected vehicles have a steering torque sensor that may not be able to properly detect driver steering input," said NHTSA in its summary of the issue. "As a result, the system could remove the electric power steering assist.
Affected Tributes were manufactured from October 5, 2006 through September 11, 2010.
Mazda has not said if there are any injuries, crashes or fatalities linked to the recall yet.
"If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash," said the NHTSA.
Mazda dealers are being instructed to update the software for the power steering control module and the instrument cluster module.
When the vehicle is brought in for the repair, and it shows a history of a loss of the torque sensor signal or fault codes relating to the power steering control module, the affected components will be replaced.
All repairs will be completed free of charge, according to Mazda.
Approximately 33,000 vehicles are affected by the recall.
The recall will begin officially sometime in July. If you're experiencing an issue with your vehicle now however, take it in to your local dealer as soon as possible.
