Sony unveiled a new virtual reality headset prototype for its PlayStation 4 games console at the annual Game Developers Conference in San Francisco,
The headset is currently in development under the name "Project Morpheus," according to Reuters.
Project Morpheus will provide a unique experience for PlayStation users by projecting a virtual reality image in front of their eyes. The image shifts as it "tracks the movement" of a user's head.
This isn't the first time Sony has released a headset device however. The company released its first "personal 3D viewer" for movie watching back in 2011.The concept has been slow to catch on however mainly due to its appearance.
Project Morpheus is the first gaming headset designed by Sony Computer Entertainment however. The company has been experimenting with the format for the last four years.
Shuhei Yoshida, the president of the division, said Sony was "encouraged by the enthusiastic response" to similar products like Oculus VR and Valve in recent months.
"This is the culmination of our work for three-plus years and realizes our vision of VR for games," said Yoshida at an event at the conference organized by Sony, according to Reuters.
Yoshida showed off a prototype of the headset at the conference, which over 350 developers, gamers, and journalists attended.
The device is a black and white with a thin strip of blue light on the rim. The headset is being designed to work with PS4's controller, camera and Move motion sensors, according to Reuters.
A release date has not been set yet by Sony, but it will be available for gamers soon.
Sony had sold 6 million PlayStation 4 devices as of March 2.
The console became available for purchase on Nov. 29 in the United States, Western Europe and Latin America.
