Microsoft will launch its Surface 2 4G LTE tablet on Tuesday for $679, the Surface Team announced Monday in a blog post.
The Windows tablet, which will use AT&T's network, will be available at Microsoft stores and online as well as from Best Buy locations, CNET reported.
Powered with a Nvidia Tegra 4 processor and 2GB of RAM, the tablet essentially has the same specifications as the Microsoft Surface 2, but in this case, Microsoft added a GSM micro-SIM card slot.
The Surface 2 4G LTE, which also features 64GB of space, has the Microsoft Office 2013 suite for work and organizational needs. It runs on Windows 8.1 RT.
The tablet is among those on AT&T's wireless networks and works with a few data plans, which vary when it comes to availability and coverage depending on the user's location.
Since the LTE-enabled version of the tablet works on the AT&T network, Internet can be accessed through the provider's wireless data instead of relying on wi-fi connections, Business Insider reported.
CNET noted that the tablet's price is a fairly good deal compared with the 64GB iPad Air, which retails for $800; however, Business Insider put the tablet at $100 pricier than the standard wi-fi 64GB device.
The Surface 2 4G is an improvement on the 2012 Surface TR tablet with a sharper screen and a better camera, but a serious downside is still the device's incompatibility with XP, Vista, or Windows 7 PC programs, according to the CNET review.
The tablet is easier to use than its predecessor and a good option for getting work done, but its app limitations and incompatibility with important programs are drawbacks, according to CNET.
