Chrysler has confirmed it is recalling approximately 18,092 Fiat 500L vehicles in the U.S. since drivers may not be able to shift out of park.
Chrysler, a unit of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, is recalling the vehicles because in certain temperatures the transmission shift lever could have either a delayed effect or no effect on choosing a specific gear, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The automaker said if there is no effect, affected vehicles will not shift out of park.
If there is a delayed effect, the vehicle could move in an unintended direction, increasing the chance of a crash or injury, according to the NHTSA.
Chrysler has not been told of any accidents or injuries related to the issue, as of Feb. 20, according to the NHTSA.
Dealers are being instructed to replace the shifter module or update the shifter software, if needed, free of charge.
The recall will begin sometime in April, according to Chrysler.
