Walmart has debuted a futuristic-looking concept truck that can run on nearly any kind of fuel.
Designed by the company, the new Walmart Advanced Vehicle Experience is 20 percent more aerodynamic than the truck currently used, Gizmodo reported via the Walmart blog.
Walmart, which has a fleet of 7,000 tractor trailers, recently began testing with the WAVE concept. The vehicle has a micro-turbine hybrid powertrain that can run on diesel, natural gas and biodiesel as well as fuels that have yet to be developed, Walmart President and CEO Doug McMillon said in the blog post.
"It may never make it to the road, but it will allow us to test new technologies and new approaches," McMillon said, adding that the concept "gives you a sense of how sustainability is helping us see things in new ways."
The WAVE can even run entirely on electricity, although with a limited range, Gizmodo reported. Made almost wholly from carbon fiber, the trailer is nearly 4,000 pounds lighter than its conventional counterpart and actually has more room for cargo due to its aerodynamic curves.
The concept was a topic at McMillon's first "Milestone Meeting" as CEO, he said in the blog post. Walmart officials also discussed other sustainability options related to air filters, landfills and more, McMillon said.
