Twitter could be rolling out a revamped design in the near future that will probably look very familiar to Internet users.
A few Twitter accounts feature an updated look that is similar to Facebook or Google+, Mashable reported.
In the change, a Twitter user's profile has the avatar and bio on the left with a much larger header photo. The updated timeline strays from the signature vertical format, opting instead for a layout that focuses on graphics and images, according to Mashable.
The new format lets users switch between seeing all tweets or just tweets that aren't replies for any user, not just verified accounts. Twitter declined to comment on the pilot feature.
In the test version, a header photo's recommended size is 1500 x 500 pixels, a change up from the current 1252 x 626 pixel size. Users will need to switch out their photos so they won't look stretched.
Mashable noted that Twitter often tests out new features with a few random accounts before launching it with a large user base. Twitter changed its web version just a few weeks ago to become more visual.
The site has remained something of a niche venture with around 218 million users compared with Facebook's more than 1 billion, but Twitter may be looking to change that with the new update.
The messaging site that relies on 140-character interactions between users seems to be searching for ways to pull in new users, The Verge reported.
While a more image-focused layout might appeal to newbies, Twitter's power accounts might not be too thrilled. The streamlined format and public yet intimate messaging style is part of Twitter's magic, something that could be lost if it imitates Facebook too closely.
Twitter should also beware of becoming too mainstream or it could see a decline among teens similar to Facebook's.
