A Washington driver is selling a beloved, restored 1970 Checker Taxi Marathon Wagon with a five-cylinder diesel engine for $9,800.
The wagon features a Mercedes-Benz OM617 and working taxi meter, Jalopnik reported. While prepared for taxi service, the vehicle has been used for family vacations for the last 10 years, according to its owner.
"We have driven the Checker from North West Canada to Southern California, and everywhere in between on family trips," the listing reads. "I would not hesitate to take her on a trip across the U.S. tomorrow."
Described as "lovingly restored" and "in great driving condition," the Checker features nearly all restored or replaced major systems, including brakes, suspension, rust-free body and the entire electrical system, according to Jalopnik's report on the listing.
"Many hours were spent by a professional body repairman to fix dents incurred while the Checker was a fleet vehicle," the owner described in the listing. "There is almost no rust in the car, which is very rare for a Checker."
The owner, who is apparently based in Burlington, Wash., said he's put around 20,000 miles on the car since the restoration work. With the vehicle's 50-gallon fuel tank and 1,000-mile driving range, it's likely been to the gas station fewer than 20 times in three or four years, Jalopnik reported.
According to the listing, the Checker also has power door locks and keyless entry that can lock and unlock the four doors from a 100-yard distance. The owner reported getting 29.5 miles per gallon on the highway--as well as plenty of looks from fellow motorists, who often took pictures of his family driving around in the Checker.
