Toyota had confirmed that its 2014 Prius hybrid recently earned a four-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The Prius received five stars in the side crash test, four stars in the front crash test, and four stars in the rollover crash test, according to the automaker.
Five stars is the highest rating a vehicle can receive for each test.
The 2014 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid has yet to be rated by NHTSA at press time.
The 2014 Toyota Prius V earned a five-star overall safety rating, and 2014 Prius C earned a four-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, respectively.
The Prius was also named a 2014 Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The 2014 Prius C and Prius V have been rated "Good" in all IIHS crash tests, though it did earn a "Poor" rating in the small overlap front crash test.
The small overlap crash test was designed to replicate what could happen if the front corner of a vehicle hits another vehicle or an object like a utility pole or tree, according to the IIHS.
Safety equipment on the 2014 Prius includes vehicle stability control, antilock brakes, traction control, and seven airbags like a driver's knee airbag, according to Toyota.
An optional pre-collision system is also available, which works by using a radar system to determine the risk of a frontal crash. If a frontal crash is deemed imminent, then the vehicle automatically applies the brakes, according to the automaker.
