Lego is considering production of a fan-designed minifigure set that has three female scientists: an astronomer, a paleontologist and a laboratory worker.

The company has long catered overwhelmingly to boys and only instated its first female scientist minifig in September, Jezebel reported via CNET.

In a recent statement, Lego said the toys appeal to children of both genders and the company has been looking to add more female characters.

"Lego play has often been more appealing to boys, but we have been very focused on including more female characters and themes that invite even more girls to build, and in the last few years, we are thrilled that we have dramatically increased the number of girls who are choosing to build," Lego said.

The new project featuring three female scientists is on Lego's CUUSOO site and comes from user Alatariel. It has garnered 10,000 supporters, according to the site.

"Although recently LEGO® has started to design and add more female figures to their sets, they are still a minority," Alatariel said in the post. "A small set of minifigures would provide a great opportunity to add women to our LEGO® town or city communities. I have designed some professional female minifigures that also show that girls can become anything they want, including a paleontologist or an astronomer."

The minifig set would encourage exploration in the world "and beyond," she said.

The proposed minifig set would comprise 138 parts, including a 6x4 base plate and accessories for each figure.

Alatariel put together 12 possible vignettes for the set and proposed the most popular three as the page brought in thousands of supporters.

"The final set will represent a versatile Research Institute comprising the labs of the Astronomer, the Paleontologist, and the Chemist," she said.

"The motto of these Scientists is clear: explore the world and beyond!"
